Yes. The profit motive always seems to win out in every market. I will definitely be taking more stimulating and thought-provoking classes in the future! Three hours a week in that film history class wasn't exactly challenging, but I did get to see Casablanca, which I hadn't thought I would like (I'm very against the entire romance genre).

Good question about foreign vs. American films. I think the reinforcement of stereotypes is the nature of the beast regardless of the source. Since making money is the prime reason for a film's development, any production company's major investment relies heavily on appealing to rather than challenging popular cultural beliefs. I'm not sure it's an intentional violation of ethics so much as riding on cultural autopilot.

If you ever get the chance to take a class on postmodern lit, I highly recommend it. It's all about presenting idealogical thought in a way that makes it foreign to our natural (questionable term, I know) assumptions.

I'm still at the community college level, so my professor just made us watch "The Birth of a Nation" and talk about camera angles. I sure wish we could have discussed more. (I can't wait to transfer and get a real education!)

That is so true about stereotypes. Is this a trend you have noticed just in American film or is this something that happens in foreign films as well. Your article on "The Last King of Scotland was also very interesting. The part where you dissect the scene in which Amin's wife is murdered and torn limb for limb really opened my eyes. I saw that movie and also accepted without question the fact that it represented a male dominance that is portrayed by many movies about Africa. It's a given here that that is part of the whole continent's culture, even though the event never happened and probably would not have occurred.

Heheheh. My friends all thought the same thing. If I weren't allergic to THC, I might have too. (Just don't ask how I learned about that allergy.)

The class I took on film last semester was eye opening, to say the least. Our professor asked us to look deeply into the messages film presented to see where our personal beliefs and social myths come from. Often film reinserts stereotypes because they are recognizeable and familiar so they sell. Unfortunately, they also reinforce these same stereotypes making it difficult for culture to shift away from old ideas.

I'm sorry to hear that this happened to you too, but glad to have offered some insight. I have a feeling Google AdSense's marketing system is creating a viable environment to sustain all kinds of copyright infringement. Unless people are alerted to such linking and follow through by reporting it, there will be no way to stop it from happening again.

And yes, Lunawolf, I think you and I share quite a few similar views. Mind if I link to you? I promise not to claim your work as my own. ;)

Wow. No one has ever presented that film to me in that way. I suppose that's due to my generation. My friends all thought it was a cool movie to smoke a bowl to when it came out.

Why, thank you! I also noticed a funny trend in links leading to my blog today. When I clicked on it, the blog had already been taken down. Curious still, I Googled the name and your post was about the fourth hit down with a wonderfully well written explanation. Not only that, but by the look of your blog, we seem to share the same interests in nailing the right-wing. I'll definitely be back to read more!
