If you ever get the chance to take a class on postmodern lit, I highly recommend it. It’s all about presenting idealogical thought in a way that makes it foreign to our natural (questionable term, I know) assumptions.

That is so true about stereotypes. Is this a trend you have noticed just in American film or is this something that happens in foreign films as well. Your article on “The Last King of Scotland was also very interesting. The part where you dissect the scene in which Amin’s wife is murdered and torn limb for limb really opened my eyes. I saw that movie and also accepted without question the fact that it represented a male dominance that is portrayed by many movies about Africa. It’s a given here that that is part of the whole continent’s culture, even though the event never happened and probably would not have occurred.

The class I took on film last semester was eye opening, to say the least. Our professor asked us to look deeply into the messages film presented to see where our personal beliefs and social myths come from. Often film reinserts stereotypes because they are recognizeable and familiar so they sell. Unfortunately, they also reinforce these same stereotypes making it difficult for culture to shift away from old ideas.
